The Restaurant

In the early 1900’s, Grandpa “Papa” Lim immigrated to America at a young 13 years old from Canton, China during the Gold Rush days. Like many other Chinese, he was seeking better opportunities for his family. He spent some time in California before eventually settling in San Antonio, Texas. 


By 1932, Grandpa “Papa” Lim saved his earnings and opened Golden Star Café in the heart of downtown San Antonio. He was famous for his scratch pies while his staff was famous for their ability to stack entire orders on each arm and his kitchen was famous for the 24/7 cooking they turned out to our amazing customers.


Golden Star Cafe prepares long-standing favorites from American, Chinese and Mexican cultures - all of which represents the diverse community we serve. There is something for everyone on the menu at Golden Star Cafe, but if you ask locals…our signature dish is our hand-breaded, FRIED FISH WITH GRAVY! 


Today, we are still family-owned and family-operated. For the last 90 years, we have been beyond proud to be a part of the fabric of San Antonio’s West Side community. Golden Star Cafe was recently recognized as a San Antonio Legacy Business.


Members of our Lim Family often run into people who tell each of us their unique Golden Star Cafe story….from first dates, to Fiesta late-night eats to multi-generation parties! We feel honored to have been a part of their lives! Here’s to many more years!
